Typography: More Than Words

I'm thinking about typography for a chapter this week and - specifically - the power of fonts to create impact on the front cover of your self-published novel. Take a tip from book designers René Burri and Suzanne Dean for the novel City on Fire by Garth Risk Hallberg. The 'panic' of the title is spelled out in a bold, clean font against a washed out background to instantly grab your attention. The unapologetic neon pink adds extra drama and signals that this is a serious book that is intended for both men and women. I like the little extra pop of colour in the yellow taxi too. It instantly places the drama in New York - a very sexy location for literature. The whole effect was screaming at me to pick it up and find out more. So I did. Bingo! Job done!
